National Zookeeper Week

In 1901, W. Reid Blair, the Bronx Zoo’s first full-time veterinarian and its director, wrote that successful keepers, “as a rule, are sympathetic and intelligent.” William Hornaday, the zoo’s first director, and William Beebe, the zoo’s first Curator of Birds, praised the zoo’s early keepers for their devotion to, and love for, the animals in their charge.

Today, a new generation of thoughtful and dedicated keepers works at WCS’s five New York City parks, including the Bronx Zoo’s Ralph Aversa (above). During National Zookeeper Week, we're celebrating them with a slate of daily events at each park. Here's what's happening at the Bronx Zoo this week:

Daily Events, July 19–22, 24–27

11:00am: Sea Lion Feeding at Astor Court
11:15am: Keeper Chat, Sea Lions, at Astor Court
11:30am: Keeper Chat, Eagles/Vultures, at Birds of Prey
1–2pm: Meet a Keeper at World of Birds
1–3pm: Meet a Keeper at Zoo Center
2–3pm: Meet a Keeper at JungleWorld
3pm: Sea Lion Feeding at Astor Court
3:30pm: Penguin Feeding at Sea Bird Aviary

Saturdays and Sundays ONLY

10:30–11am: Storytime with a Keeper at Dancing Crane Plaza

Tuesday and Thursday ONLY

10:30–11:30am: Meet a Keeper at World of Reptiles

Wednesday, July 23

11:00am: Sea Lion Feeding at Astor Court
1–3pm: Meet a Keeper at Zoo Center
